Tides add American forward Meredith McDermott

The Halifax Tides have been relatively quiet this transfer window but made a splash this week as they announced the club had signed American attacker Meredith McDermott to a contract.

McDermott, who hails from Nashua, N.H., joins the Tides after an impressive four seasons with the University of Virginia, matching her attacking play on the pitch with academic excellence.

“Meredith is an exciting young player who brings energy, attacking quality, and a strong competitive mindset,” said Ruth Fahy, vice president of football for the Tides.

“She has consistently performed at a high level in one of the strongest conferences in college soccer, and we believe she has all the attributes to make a successful transition to the professional game. We're excited to welcome her to Halifax."

McDermott joins an attacking group which is much improved this season, boasting fellow American Jordyn Rhodes, Sydney Kennedy, Saorla Miller and veteran Tiffany Cameron up front. They've combined 15 goals so far this season, nearly besting last year's tally despite having 12 matches left to play.

However, given their attacking depth, it'll be interesting to see where Tides head coach Stephen Hart opts to play McDermott.

“I am grateful for this opportunity and eager to help contribute to the team’s success. I have heard the environment at Wanderers Grounds is one of the best in the NSL and I can’t wait to get started and meet everyone.”

The Tides next play on August 3 in Halifax.
