Halifax Tides join inaugural W Canadian Championship

The W Canadian Championship is just around the corner, with the Halifax Tides kicking off the inaugural competition on August 3 at the Wanderers Grounds versus Ottawa Rapid FC.

Canada Soccer announced the creation of the cup tournament on Thursday.

“We are proud to launch the inaugural W Canadian Championship, a significant milestone in the continued growth of women’s professional soccer in Canada," said Mathieu Chamberland, chief of soccer operations and associate general secretary.

"We thank our partners at the Northern Super League and Premier Soccer Leagues Canada for their collaboration in bringing this competition to life. We also encourage supporters across the country to get behind their clubs and be part of this exciting new chapter for the women’s game in Canada.”

The rewards for winning the competition are plentiful as it's part of the pathway to the 2027 Concacaf W Champions Cup and the 2028 FIFA Women's Club World Cup.

A total of eight clubs are part of the tournament, including all six Northern Super League sides. They're also joined by two semi-professional clubs — CS Mont-Royal Outremont  and Simcoe County Rovers FC — to round out the quarter-final round.

All four series will be decided with a single, knockout match.
