Tides sign pacey attacker Stella Downing

Attacker Stella Downing has been swept up by the Halifax Tides, signing a deal through the 2026 season.

Downing, who hails from Vancouver, B.C., spent last year with the Ottawa Rapid, contributing three goals and two assists across 23 matches. Now, she'll ply her trade as a member of the Tides as they look to add some bite in the final third. The Tides had the worst offence in the Northern Super League's (NSL) inaugural season, scoring just 17 times.

The club is hoping Downing's pace and bravery down the wings will help them bag a few more goals.

“Stella is a tricky and versatile attacker that gave opponents fits last year and is equally gritty in helping the team win the ball and launch the next attack,” said Tides sporting director Amit Batra.

“In watching her commitment to the team and in meeting her, Stella fits exactly the type of culture we’ve created and will be a valuable addition to our locker room, the pitch and the community.”

Previous to her time in the NSL, Downing played at Creighton University, earning All-Big East honours in 2024. She also represented Canada at the Concacaf U-17 Championship in 2019.

"I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to continue to play the game I love professionally," said Downing last year on joining the NSL.

"To be able to do it in my home country and be a part of history in Canada is a true blessing."

The exact length of Downing's contract are unknown.

The Tides recently confirmed Stephen Hart as head coach following his time as interim. They also announced that Ruth Fahy, who worked with Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids for three years, as vice-president of football operations.

More roster announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
