Sources: Wanderers working to cut ties with midfielder Giorgio Probo

The Halifax Wanderers are in the process of terminating Italian midfielder Giorgio Probo's contract, sources told HFX Football Post on Monday night. The motivation behind the club's move to cut ties with one of their most talented players remains unclear.
Sources noted the move has not yet been officially completed but is in the process of being finalized. It is expected that the news, said sources, will be announced in the coming days. When contacted for comment, a club spokesperson said they do not comment on speculation.
Probo joined the Wanderers in 2024 following two excellent seasons at Creighton University, causing his former coach Johnny Torres to proclaim him the best NCAA midfielder in America. However, the 26-year old underwhelmed during his first year in Halifax, often starting on the bench as he looked to find his form.

He finished 2024 with four goals and two assists through 28 matches.
But Probo looked poised to play a leading role in 2025 as he began the season strongly with a goal versus Atlético Ottawa. He continued a solid run of play through April, May and part of June. The last several weeks, however, have seen Probo come off the bench as a substitute, which could be considered surprising given his talent and renewed work ethic to start the campaign.
Against Valour FC on July 1, Probo came in during the 89th minute and hadn't started since. The Atalanta academy product had registered five goal contributions through 16 league appearances and showcased his vision and passing ability in several key moments this season.
Probo was ultimately left off the matchday squad versus Vancouver FC on Monday's Natal Day tilt. Asked post-match about the midfielder's availability, as he wasn't listed on injured reserve, Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar explained Probo's absence as a "tactical decision."
The Wanderers lost to Vancouver FC 2-1.
