Halifax Wanderers striker Tiago Coimbra is in the United States following the conclusion of his Canadian Premier League (CPL) season and is training with a Major League Soccer (MLS) side, sources told HFX Football Post on Wednesday.

It's not the first time the Brazilian-Canadian has trained with clubs at a higher level: he also spent time with the English Premier League's (EPL) West Ham United in February, including reps with the first team at their East London training facility. But it's unclear whether the current training stint, at a yet to be identified club, will lead to something more.

Coimbra has always been a high potential player for the Wanderers. However, this past year saw the 21-year old striker explode for 13 goals and three assists across 23 matches, delivering on strong underlying numbers that suggested the potential for a breakout going back to 2023 and 2024. The Wanderers were a different team with Coimbra on the pitch as his nose for goal, improved movement and ability on set pieces helped guide them to a club record of 41 goals scored.

Tiago Coimbra is having a breakout season. The numbers suggest he’s only just beginning to realize his potential.
Tiago Coimbra came into this season with a lot of expectations. Be it the lengthy contract extension he signed with the Halifax Wanderers, his switch to the coveted No. 9 shirt or his training spell with English Premier League side West Ham United, the 21-year old striker began 2025 looking

His 0.87 goals per 90 minutes was the best in the CPL in 2025.

And Coimbra's certainly gotten recognition in recent weeks as he's been nominated for both the CPL's Best Canadian U-21 Player and Player's Player of the Year awards. His statistics, in many ways, surpass those of Kwasi Poku, who won the Best Canadian U-21 Player last year and was sold mid-season to Belgian club RWD Molenbeek for a CPL record fee.

Speaking to HFX Football Post after signing his latest contract, Coimbra pulled no punches about his expectations for himself, including his desire to move onto a higher level.

"I want to put Halifax on the map," he explained. "Me and Halifax, we have some plans for me to go to bigger places and the only thing now, that we’re going to be able to tell it from, is through my football."

Coimbra's deal, which is guaranteed through 2026 with options for 2027 and 2028, means the Wanderers would get any transfer fee should he be sold. His profile and technical ability, not to mention developing with one of Brazil's top clubs in Palmeiras and time with Canada's U-20 program, are surely enticing to prospective buyers.

The biggest question around a future move, of course, revolves around Coimbra's ability to stay healthy. He missed significant time through his first two seasons but set a career record for minutes played with 1,344 this year. It remains to be seen if this training stint with an MLS club will lead to more.

HFX Football Post will provide an update in the following days as more information becomes available.
