Sources: Noah Abatneh back on the market after sacking of Helsingborgs IF head coach

Canadian defender Noah Abatneh is back on the market after Helsingborgs IF sacked head coach Stevie Grieve this week, putting an end to the 21-year-old’s potential move to the historic Swedish club.

Sources briefed on the negotiations had told HFX Football Post that the Canadian Premier League Defender of the Year and Best Canadian U-21 Player nominee was nearing a transfer to send him to Helsingborgs, which is in Sweden’s second division, back in July.

However, with Helsingborgs’ form slipping, the deal never went through as the club evaluated their position and ultimately sacked the head coach trying to bring in the Canadian defender.

It remains to be seen what’s next for Abatneh, who had impressed during a North Star Cup winning season with Atlético Ottawa. His resume, which includes time with Roma and Lazio’s academies, and play previously caught the attention of Canadian Men’s National Team head coach Jesse Marsch, who called up the towering defender this year for a friendly versus Guatemala.
