Sources: Jonantán Villal to join Atlético Ottawa on loan from Atlético de San Luis

Atlético de San Luis midfielder Jonantán Villal will join sister-club Atlético Ottawa on loan for the 2026 season, sources told HFX Football Post on Thursday. The move was first reported by reporter Karen Peña.

Villal, 21, is the latest San Luis player to move to Canada in search of experience. A diminutive attacking midfielder, the American-born Villal came up through Atlanta United's academy before being transferred to San Luis in 2023. He made his professional debut for Atlanta United 2 on July 10, 2021 and marked 36 appearances across the USL Championship and MLS Next Pro.

This past year has seen Villal suit up for San Luis in Liga MX U-21 Apertura. He played 1,154 minutes across 16 appearances while scoring two goals. Sources explained playing with Atlético Ottawa will give the young midfielder a chance at more significant minutes playing against men and the opportunity to further develop.

Sources added more San Luis players are expected to be announced by Atlético Ottawa in the coming weeks.
