Sources: Defender Roni Mbomio set to sign for Atlético Ottawa
Atlético Ottawa supporters will be reunited with a familiar face as defender Roni Mbomio is set to sign for the club through 2026, sources told HFX Football Post on Monday.
Mbomio, 20, joined Atlético Ottawa on loan towards the end of last season but made an instant impact, suiting up in five league matches before playing an important part in the club's North Star Cup victory.
Since the conclusion of the CPL season, Mbomio's continued to hit career milestones, including his international debut for Equatorial Guinea. He also trained with Atlético de Madrid's first-team ahead of a Champions League match in November.
Atlético Ottawa opened training camp last week as they prepare to play in the Concacaf Champions Cup. However, they've lost several key players this off-season, be it to a higher level (Sam Salter) or CPL rivals (Nathan Ingham).
Mbomio's return gives head coach Diego Mejía options as the young defender is comfortable at right-back or on either end of a back three. It remains to be seen how the rest of the squad shapes up as they prepare to host MLS side Nashville SC on February 17 in Hamilton.
